THE LEGO GUITAR

&

MY GUITAR ROOM!

By way of review, for any of you who missed out on my announcement and update of this project.  The east wall of my Guitar Room has been woefully bereft of adornments.  After my daugher left for college, it didn't take me long to claim her old room as my Guitar Room and decorate it accordingly.  While the other walls quickly took shape, the east wall stood bare... it was a sad sight to behold.

I put the word out to my cyberbuddies here at JU, seeking ideas on what to do about the blank white wall.  Some really awesome JUers reinforced my opinion of them by making some really great suggestions.  However, as I looked into instituting them, I realized I had been on the wrong track.

A few weeks ago, while down in my basement, I saw the container that holds my slightly more than adequate Lego collection causing the 35 watt idea bulb to flash over my head.

So there's the review.

Transforming a boatload of legos into a guitar themed work of art is no small task.  I had to restart the project several times.  First because the simple act of making a round guitar butt with square blocks isn't as simple as it may sound.  Then, once I had the bricks arranged the way I thought I wanted them, the outcome wasn't as good as I'd envisioned.

There was also the drawback I talked about in my last update... the one about black legos ordered turning brown in transit.  As you can see though, what could have been an earth shattering end, only because part of the fun.  I think the brown fretboard worked out pretty well.. don't you?

Monday, it all came together.  The lego guitar was completed... but that brought up another challege.  Exactly how does one hang such a work of art on the wall.  I sprayed the back of the guitar with a great spray adhesive, so falling apart wasn't going to be the problem... but still, I have a great time playing guitars; I had a really awesome time designing and building my lego guitar; but nothing in my life so far has given me cause to "just know" how to mount a guitar on the wall.

With the help of my wife, we came up with a plan.  I would put picture hangers (the little flat strips of metal with sort of a "saw tooth" edge) on the back of the guitar.  They would fit over screws put in the wall with wall anchors, just to be sure.  That idea fell flat.  The hangers weren't as pliable as I thought, so they broke when I bent the ends to slide in between legos.

Then I started looking at the backs of the legos.  As most of you know, there are little round holes in the backs of legos.  Little round holes that wall anchors slide into quite easily.  When you tighten the screw into the anchor, it expands the anchor, making it so it won't slip out of the wall.  It turns out that the expanded anchor won't slip from the little holes in the back of Legos either.

So I anchored the picture hangers directly on the wall and viola! The guitar mounted quite easily and efficiently.

So, here, for your viewing pleasure.. I present a photo tour of My Own Little 7x9 Corner of the World...

I am impressed! Very good work especially on the legos!

WOW!!! I MEAN...WOWEEWOW.
The lego project came out great. And what guitar room would be complete with out the chord chart, almost totally useless to the self-taught (speaking strictly for myself) but absolutely cool. May your string tribe increase and your chords always ring harmonious.
And maybe some day we can sit and jam out a tune or two.

That's... amazing...

Where did you get those legos? Were they ordered from the website or did they come from a bin? I recall getting a bin full of black legos for a model I made, but I cannot remember if I got it from a store or the website, and I'm too lazy to go to the store to check (not that they'd likely have them anymore), and I'm much more lazy about going to the website.

I actually know nothing about playing the guitar. All I know about is piano.

Very nice, Para. What's the acoustic?

Excellent work, although I'd like to offer one teeny suggestion:  The record display kinda distracts from the guitar, I'd move them a little further away from it.

Have you considered using old CDs as wall decor?  They're shiny and pretty and will reflect any cool lighting you set up--do an entire wall in 'em and it would look majorly wicked under a blacklight or strobe.

I had a friend that would collect all those 'AOL Free Trial' CDs or the CDs from Wal-Mart at the checkout saying, 'Use Wal-Mart Net Zero' or some caca doodie like that and mounted them all over his room, the windshield of his car, pretty much everywhere.

It was cool.

As for the room, Ted, it looks good - that Lego guitar was probably a blast to figure out.

Awesome!  I love the Lego guitar.  I'm a bit of a Lego lover thanks to my hubby and boys.  We probably have enough Legos in our house to make several kinds of guitars

The room looks great!  thanks for sharing.

Most of the legos here are well over 20 years old.   I've been accumulating legos since my wife bought me a set one Christmas.  I've always loved them, and we were surrounded with them as kids, but alas, you can't take them with you when you go... So I had to start getting my own. ;~D

Nothing wrong with piano, but wow, think of all the legos it would take to make one! :~D

Wow, I love the lego guitar, I'm a big lego fan. I have a co-worker who's husband is a guitar fanatic.

He sells a lot of stuff he finds in pawnshops on ebay and makes tons of money. He has a nice collection of guitars on his wall in his ebay room. You guys would get along great.

Another cool decoration would be streamers made from old cassette and 8-track tapes...

Thanks! My acoustic is an Alvarez Regent.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I like it how it is. Also, the records serve a functional purpose as well as an aesthetic one, so moving them wouldn't really work.

CDs in my guitar room! Perish the thought! :~D

Actually, I did try some, but flashy things like that just didn't seem to work well in such a small room.

Both fun and frustrating. I had to restart the whole project a few times. I also had ideas that came late (like the stripes on the face) that required a little "disassembly" to pull off.

It was a fun project though!

Ted, I'm loving it too!  Nice job and it's great to be able to do a project like this for yourself!

Really nice work. You should be very proud! It's quite an ambitious project and you really pulled it off!

(Your walls are so white, though! haha.)
